History

Lisle Funeral HomeJohn N. Lisle established 2 funeral homes in Sanger. He also ran the local telephone company, along with a furniture and hardware business. In 1913, he sold both funeral homes and purchased the Beal Brothers Funeral Home in Fresno and renamed it Lisle Funeral Home.

In 1932, he purchased the Swift Mansion and moved to the current location of Lisle Funeral Home. While Lisle Funeral Home has occupied the Swift Mansion since 1932, the home itself dates back to 1905 when Harvey Swift, an early Fresno lumberman, designed and built it for $40,000 to $50,000—an extraordinary sum in the early 1900s. In 1939, the Calaveras Chapel was added on the southern end of the building, and in 1960, a smaller chapel named after Mr. Lisle was added to the north end.

With a beautiful Georgian Revival-style building and ties to local historical figures, Lisle Funeral Home is an intricate part of the Fresno landscape and continues to be regarded among the most prestigious funeral homes in the greater Fresno area. Since opening in 1905, the Swift Mansion has hosted costume balls, birthday parties, church affairs and other social events.
